Magazine Cover Wraps By The Numbers: What Print Can Do and Digital Can’t 
A Mr. Magazine™ Exclusive from MediaRadar: "There really is still a meaningful business here. About 20% of titles have sold a cover wrap in the past year, and both b2b and consumer magazine titles are active." Says MediaRadar’s CEO Todd Krizelman.

Digital's Ad Expansion: the Long and Short of It
An influential Wall Street analyst this morning predicts the industry’s dominant players will report strong second-quarter results this week, but warns that digital’s incremental advertising boon may be poised to stall. “There are many reasons to look at digital advertising through a negative lens at the present time,” Pivotal Research Group’s Brian Wieser writes in a note sent to investors this morning.

Melissa Giannini is the new features director at Elle, where Nina Garcia was named editor in chief last fall, succeeding Robbie Myers, who held the title for nearly 20 years. And Giannini also has the title of editor in chief on her résumé, as she led independent magazine Nylon from 2015 to 2017, when the magazine ended its print edition.
 

Outside Magazine Teams with the Gotham Group to Develop Film, TV Projects 
OUTSIDE, America's leading active lifestyle publication, aligns with The Gotham Group for big push into film: "Outside Studios will produce content for film, television and new media for what will be different platforms and distributors. Outside, which began in 1977 and is owned by the Mariah Media Network, is also known as the only magazine to have won three consecutive National Magazine Awards for general excellence." Reports Anita Busch at Deadline Hollywood.
 


Google’s Richard Gingras: Platforms Didn’t Destroy Journalism’s Business Model 
The open web transformed and effectively shrank the role of news organizations. With new business models coming in, it’s becoming clear that not all news organizations will survive and that newsrooms will become smaller, according to Richard Gingras, vp of news at Google.
 

California Today: A Throwback to Magazines of Old, with Very Little Trump News - More on Alta 
Some California magazines have been edited in San Francisco. Others hailed from Los Angeles. Alta, an ambitious new quarterly, is assuredly the only one put together in a spare bedroom in Lawrence, Kansas. “I have a good perspective on California because I’m 1,500 miles away,” said Mark Potts, Alta’s managing editor.
 


Leslie Hackett, editor in chief and digital director of Pacific Magazine, moved from Auburn, population 14,000, to pursue her interest in journalism at San Diego State University, enrollment 33,000.
