Magazines: From Dimensional to Digital

June 16, 2010 - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Managing and Monetizing the Content Eco-System

This is the first conference to explore in detail the challenges and opportunities associated with managing and monetizing the content eco-system for a multi-channel, multi-device world.

And the conference is also about using simple technologies such as bar codes, Augmented Reality, and an array of sensory treatments to enrich editorial and advertising content and increase consumer engagement.

Content will indeed be king if publishers increase the value of content early in the process through use of XML, deep meta-tagging, and a consideration of standards and workflow conditions. These considerations are even more important now as publishers are eagerly preparing advertising and editorial content for the iPad. Accordingly we will look at workflow and software solutions from a number of companies that are wrestling with the reflow of content to the tablet, from building out the basic print version with InDesign tools to creating a rich media experience.

John Squires, Managing Director, Next Issue Media, will open the conference and talk about the content consortium's progress to date and the importance of using technology to better understand and monetize content. Peter Meirs, VP Production Technologies, Time Inc. and Dianne Kennedy, VP Media Technologies, IDEAlliance will discuss the progress being made with enhanced ePUB standards and challenges associated with preparing rich editorial and advertising media for the iPad and other devices. Bill Trippe, Vice President & Lead Analyst, Content Strategies, the Gilbane Group (part of Outsell) will discuss strategic issues publishers might want to consider before they place "bets" on platforms and devices. The conference will also feature an array of companies that enhance the physical magazine through use of technologies. For example, SMUB (hy.pr) will discuss inexpensive ways to link print magazines to social media through the mobile web. Other companies will discuss bar codes, QR codes, and Augmented Reality, focusing on the business and editorial implications when using these technologies. Tod Riedel, until recently COO & CFO of Structural Graphics, a company that focuses on technologies that link the print/dimensional product to the digital, will provide a primer on technologies that enhance, deepen and extend reader engagement. He will discuss sensory treatments, bar code technologies, Augmented Reality and the like. He will focus on the business implications of these technologies.

Technology is creating new value and opportunities for monetizing content, from deep mining data to maximizing content value and linking print with the social web.
